Can I vote if I moved since I last registered?+
Only if you updated your voting address with the IEC. In local elections you may only vote at the voting station where you are registered — there is no way to vote elsewhere. Update your address on the IEC voter portal.
When does the voters' roll close?+
On the day the election is officially proclaimed — expected in August 2026. After that date, no new registrations or address changes can be accepted for the 4 November election.
Can I register online?+
Yes. Register or update on the IEC voter portal. You'll need your ID number, a phone that can receive an OTP, and a photo of your ID document.
What ID do I need at the voting station?+
One of: green bar-coded ID book, smart ID card, or valid Temporary ID Certificate. Driver's licences and passports are NOT accepted. If you've lost your ID, get a TIC from Home Affairs — it works on the day.
Can I vote anywhere in Joburg?+
No. This is the number-one misconception. You may only vote at the station where you are registered. Not the nearest one, not the one near work — only your registered station. That's why keeping your address up to date is the single biggest thing to check.
What is a special vote?+
A special vote lets you cast your ballot early if you can't attend on 4 November — for example, if you'll be working, sick, disabled, elderly, pregnant, or away. It's done either at your station the day before, or through a home visit. Application dates open once the election is proclaimed.
Why are there two ballots?+
In metro elections you vote for two things:
Ward councillor: a person representing your street.
Proportional representation: a party — sets seat share in the metro council.
Both together decide who runs Joburg.
Is this site affiliated with the IEC or any political party?+
No. Joburg Election Ready is an independent, non-partisan civic tool. We are not affiliated with the IEC or any political party. Every personal lookup happens on IEC properties — we never see your ID number.
Yes. You can register from age 16, but you may only vote in an election if you'll be 18 or older by election day. If you're 18 by 4 November 2026, you can vote.
What if my name isn't on the roll on the day?+
Ask the presiding officer to check the "certified segment" of the voters' roll. If you're registered elsewhere, they'll tell you which station. You cannot vote at the wrong station — this is why checking your registration before the day is essential.
Do you store my answers or ID number?+
No. All your quiz answers, plan, and pledge stay in your browser's local storage on this device only. We never ask for your ID number. All personal lookups happen on IEC properties — not ours.
